Questions
Everything people ask about Scriby, the quiet writing app for novelists on Mac.
What is Scriby?
A distraction-free word processor for authors, for Mac. Your library is a bookshelf, your chapters are plain files on your disk, and nothing pops up while you type.
Is Scriby a Scrivener alternative?
If you are looking for a Scrivener alternative on Mac, Scriby does the same job for novelists, with chapters, outline cards, a story bible and book export, in one calm window. Your words stay in plain files, and there is no subscription.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. Only the Companion with a hosted model, painted covers and update downloads use the network, and only when you ask.
Why does macOS warn me when I open it?
Scriby is not yet notarized by Apple, which needs a paid developer account. Follow step 3 above once and it is done.
Is there a subscription or an account?
No accounts, no subscription, no lock-in.
Does it work on Intel Macs, Windows or Linux?
Yes on Intel Macs: the latest release has a separate Intel download. Windows and Linux builds are not offered on this site.
Can I use my existing NEO library?
Yes. Scriby reads the same NEO Library folder and the same plain files.
What can I export to?
EPUB 3, Word, PDF, KDP paperback interiors, manuscript format, HTML, Markdown and plain text.
Is my writing safe?
Scriby autosaves as you type, takes a snapshot before each writing day, keeps a daily backup zip for two weeks, and never throws words away. Deleted passages go to Darlings or the system Trash.
Does Scriby use AI?
Only if you want it. The Companion is a drafting assistant that works from your story bible and speaks only when you ask. Your writing stays in plain files on your disk.
Can I write screenplays in Scriby?
Yes. Screenplays use industry format on the same shelves as your books, with Fountain and Final Draft import and export.
Can I use it for my own books?
Yes, for any personal or commercial purpose of your own, and your books belong to you. The license asks for permission before you copy, modify, redistribute or sell Scriby itself.
